Reyn McCullough’s Store

Original Reyn’s Mens Wear in Avalon circa 1949

My closet is full of shirts that say Reyn Spooner on the label. They come from a company that was started by Reynolds McCullough (known to everyone as Reyn) who grew up on Catalina Island. When he came home from the service in WW II he began working at a men’s shop in Avalon. Reyn proved to have a keen eye for fashion and marketing; so in 1949, he bought his employer’s shop and renamed it Reyn’s Men’s Wear. The photo above was taken 70 years ago.

We usually spend a few days on Catalina every summer, so I decided to track down Reyn’s store and discovered it is now a restaurant. A restaurant I frequent more often than I should. Note the bird house is still there.
