At the south end of the Salton Sea is an area just beyond the southern terminus f the San Andreas Fault where the earth’s crust is very thin. Water seeps into the area near the hot mantle of the earth and turns into steam that rises through the earth turning into super hot mud that bubbles to the surface in the form of mud pots.
